Legislation, Guidelines and Standards
Mohawk is committed to the promotion of effective heath and safety programs in the use of its products. The user should ensure that cutting tools are used correctly and that safe working procedures are developed and followed for all operations including those which use cutting tools. The guidelines given here are general in nature and cannot address in detail the many variations in application and working conditions. In general Mohawk , advises that appropriate legislation, guidelines and standards should be followed at all times. This includes the necessity to identify and assess hazards and risks and implement adequate controls.

• General Safety, Health and Welfare at Work legislation.

Hazard and Risk Assessment
All hazards and risks must be assessed and controlled adequately. The assessment and control of hazards and risks should be ensured by competent persons who are in a position to take into account all the factors involved. Some of the safeguards required in using cutting tools include:

• Machine guarding to an approved standard
• Eye protection should be provided and worn again to an approved standard.
• Correct handling to avoid cuts and lacerations as a result of sharp edges.
• Suitable gloves and apron to avoid prolonged or repeated contact with the protective oil coating.
• Appropriate ventilation to control the grinding dust (dry grinding) or coolant mist (wet grinding) when regrinding the tool.
• Appropriate ventilation should also be applied during use if dust or mist are produced.
• Consideration should be given to the possible contaminants in the dust or mist due to the contents of the tool, the surface being machined and the coolant. This includes potential leaching of Cobalt by some Coolants. Major constituents of the tool are outlined in an earlier section.
• An appropriate respirator may also be necessary, particularly during regrinding of the tool.
• Avoid subjecting tools to sudden impacts.
• Avoid the use of loose clothing, jewelry etc.
• Ensure tools are properly ground, and are not worn, damaged or bent

In addition to the above, the use of cutting tools in portable appliances requires particular precautions, including:

• Ensure the user is properly trained in the safe use of portable appliances with cutting tools.
• Avoid exceeding the recommended limits of the appliance.
• Ensure the appliance is well maintained.
• Ensure tools are secure and correctly seated in the chuck before use.
• Ensure electrical connections and supplies are adequately protected.
• Apply good manual handling and ergonomic practice.
